The community of Carrizalito has a population of approximately 150 people. A nearby spring with a constructed spring box provides enough water for the entire community. The problem is that the spring is located at a lower elevation than the houses in the community. Without electricity, the community has not found an efficient way to pump the water up to their households.

Women and children spend hours each day hauling water from the springs to their households. Community members could be using their time for more productive activities.

Global Community Development proposes a solar water pump to pump the water from the spring to an elevated storage tank, and rainwater catchment units at each household to supplement the potable water with rainwater. The potable water and rainwater can be stored and used for washing and bathing.

Decentralized treatment for drinking water is proposed for each household with either slow-sand filters or ceramic filters. Both are produced locally in a factory in Honduras. The community also lacks latrines in over 90% of the households. A latrine project will accompany the water project.
