Corral Falso, Yoro
Water, Sanitation

The community of Corral Falso has a population of approximately 125 people. The existing water system was built almost 30 years ago and has been seriously malfunctioning since Hurricane Mitch. Less than half the houses on the system get water pressure.

The tank is undersized and the water is not chlorinated. The community claims that many of the pipes are clogged with sediment. The spring serving the system is uncovered and open to contamination. The contamination caused risk to the coffee produced on plantation plantations nearby.

Approximately 11% of the community members regularly boil their water for consumption. Another 28% use chlorine in the household for disinfection. The other 67% do not report treating the water that they consume. Many people in the community regularly suffer from water and sanitation related illnesses. The rate of reported cases of diarrhea and parasites at the local clinic is higher in this community than in neighboring communities in the region.

Global Community Development proposes to construct a new water system with a larger storage tank, a sanitary sprint catchment box, and a new distribution network. Decentralized treatment for drinking water is proposed in each household with either slow-sand filters or ceramic filters, both produced locally in a factory in Honduras.

GCD recommends contracting a trained health and sanitation officer to reside in the region for a month or two The health and sanitation officer would provide assistance and training to the water board and community members.
