Water, Sanitation

The community of La Cumbre has a population of approximately 90 people. The community does not have a water system. Many women and children from the community spend hours each day hauling water from springs to their homes.

Community members could be using their time for more productive activities. A few springs are located several kilometers away from the community, and may be adequate for use in a potable water system.

Global Community Development proposes to asses the potential water sources to determine they are adequate to use in constructing a piped water system to the community.

If none of the springs are high enough in elevation, the proposed solution is to install a combination of solar water pumps to pump the water from the springs to an elevated storage tank.

Rainwater catchment units at each household could also be used to supplement the potable water. The rainwater can be stored and used for washing and bathing. Decentralized treatment for drinking water is proposed in each household with either slow-sand filters or ceramic filters, which are both produced locally in a factory in Honduras.
