La Joya, Yoro
Water, Sanitation
The community of La Joya has a population of approximately 80 people. Several nearby springs provide water for the entire community. The problem is that the springs are located at a lower elevation than the houses in the community. Without electricity, the community has not found an efficient way to pump the water up to their households.
Women and children spend hours each day hauling water from the springs to their households. Community members could be using this time for more productive activities. Health and safety risks are concerns.
Global Community Development proposes to install solar water pumps to pump the water from the springs to an elevated storage tank. Rainwater catchment units at each household are proposed to supplement the potable water with rainwater. The potable water and rainwater can be stored and used for washing and bathing. Decentralized treatment for drinking water is proposed for each household with either slow-sand filters or ceramic filters. Both produced locally in a factory in Honduras.
